As part of the Cinemaeye programme, in part dedicated to the films of Fernand Deligny, Tribute to a Vision will host a panel discussion on the contemporary resonance of his work, following the screenings of Le moindre geste (1971) and Ce gamin, là (1975).
Deligny, a critical pedagogue, writer, and filmmaker, devoted his life to working with socially excluded young people, primarily autistic children, developing radical approaches to care and education based on observation, communication and autonomy. His work has also been influential beyond pedagogy and psychiatry, leaving a mark on visual anthropology and philosophy, including the work of Deleuze and Guattari.
What can we learn from these films amid today's debates about social alienation and mental health? How do Deligny's aphoristic reflections and filmmaking practice reshape the understanding of cinema as a medium? What does this legacy tell us about modes of living beyond the social and economic structures of capitalism?
Rajko Muršič is professor of ethnology/cultural anthropology at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Arts, Dept. of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology. His research focuses on music, sound, theories of culture, epistemology, urban anthropology, methodology of anthropological research, sensory studies, digital anthropology, the use of algorithms, ethnological heritage, (in)equality, political and economic anthropology, violence, racism, etc.
Carmelo Marabello teaches Film and Anthropology of Images at the University Iuav in Venice, having previously served as one of the authors for the Italian television program Fuori Orario cose (mai) viste. He is the author of books such as Malia. Cinema e paesaggio in Sicilia (Enchantment: Cinema and Landscape in Sicily, 2010) and Sulle tracce del vero. Cinema, antropologia, storie di foto (On the Traces of the Real: Cinema, Anthropology, Photo Stories, 2011). Additionally, he contributed the entry "Everyday" ("Quotidiano") to the Lexicon of Italian Cinema (Lessico del cinema italiano, 2016).
