CinemaEye: Milka Badjura vs. Luigi Di Gianni

A dialogue across time between masters of the past and questions of the present

How can film document a world that no longer exists? And what happens when we turn a new gaze towards archival images?

The programme CinemaEye: Milka Badjura vs. Luigi Di Gianni brings together two cinematic legacies and two distinct ways of looking at the world. Slovenian filmmaker Milka Badjura and Italian director Luigi Di Gianni used their cameras to document everyday life, work, customs and communities in their respective environments. Today, their films are not merely records of a particular time but living film archives – images through which we can revisit the past and understand it from a different perspective.

Through a selection of short films by both filmmakers, we will reflect on the relationship between film, history and memory: what remains in an image when time disappears, and how can an archive become a space for a new way of seeing?

The programme will be introduced by curators Mila Lazić and Žiga Brdnik.

The films will be screened with English subtitles.

The programme continues in Ljubljana after the festival: a selection of films by Milka Badjura and Luigi Di Gianni will also be screened at the Slovene Cinematheque on 5 November.

Admission to all festival screenings is free. The programme is organised in collaboration with the Slovenian Film Archive at the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia, the Slovene Cinematheque, the Slovenian Film Centre and Cineteca Lucana.
