High School Films From Istria

5 SECONDS
Group of students from „Zvane Črnja“ High School from Rovinj, 2025, 6'

This is a film about a challenging period of life the protagonsists find themselves in, filled with hard decisions which are not easy to make. There are many questions, but not enough answers. The highschoolers from Rovinj, in their own, humoristic way showed the dilemmas and the difficulty of the choices needed to be made in a relatively short amount of time.

ŠOLJAN AND ROVINJ
Group of students from „Zvane Črnja“ High School from Rovinj, 2025, 5'

This is a film about Antun Šoljan, a croatian poet, translator, dramatist and writer born in Belgrade, who periodically lived in Rovinj and made a special connection with the picturesque town on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula. The story starts with the only fact known to us, the house Antun Šoljan lived and wrote in. The rest is imagination.

ULTIMUS LECTOR
Group of students from „Zvane Črnja“ High School from Rovinj, 2026, 8'

Created by high school students from Rovinj, the film explores the theme of “The End of Literature.” Through a subtly humorous lens, it reflects on a contemporary world increasingly shaped by digital technology, where the culture of reading is steadily declining. The story follows the last member of what was once a large community of literature enthusiasts — Knjigor — who, under various influences from the surrounding world, is forced to change and adapt.

ARCHITECTURE AND POWER
Gymnasium Pula; Bartol Pekica, Erik Bačac, Petar Šimunić, Mate Poljak, Ella Peteh, 2026, 14'

This short film follows five friends as they wander through the city while exploring its architecture. With a touch of humor, the film introduces viewers to fascinating aspects of the city's architectural heritage, revealing how the influence and power of different rulers shaped Pula and its surrounding area throughout various historical periods.

BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
Lana Mirković, Pazinski kolegij, Gymnasium Pazin, 2026, 5'

The film opens by portraying people completely absorbed in their mobile phones. They walk through the streets without noticing the world around them, resembling zombies who are oblivious to both the people and the events surrounding them. In the second part of the film, mobile phones gradually disappear from everyday life, and people begin to talk, spend time together, enjoy nature, and appreciate life's simple moments. The film conveys the message that life can be more beautiful, fulfilling, and connected when we step away from our screens and pay greater attention to the world around us.

13523712151981517_film-va-kove-smo-si-sejni.pngWHO DO WE RESEMBLE
Students from Labin, 2026, 9'

Who Do We Resemble is an experimental film in the protected local dialect spoken in and around Labin. Through the testimonies of two miners, Nino Kos Mikota and Josip Pino Štemberg, and the miner's daughter Marija Golja, the film tells the story of the harsh lives of Labin's miners while paying tribute to the men whose labour and solidarity shaped the identity of the Labin region. Speaking in their protected local dialect, the protagonists recount the dangers of working underground, mining accidents, and the everyday challenges they faced. The film is realised using a technique that combines cinematic and theatrical expression, employing the method of the Liquid Theatre .
