Edi Šelhaus

Photographer in photoreporter

Biography
Eduard Edi Šelhaus, a photojournalist in slippers—as he liked to call himself—was born in 1919 in Podkraj, Vipava. His parents, both photographers, decided his profession: He would be a photographer. In 1943, he set off with his Leica camera to join the partisans. He joined the newly formed SNOS photo section and photographed valuable testimonies of war events in the vicinity of Bela Krajina. After the war, the city of Trieste became the main European stage where boundaries between East and West (communism-capitalism) were set. For this reason, Edi was sent by Belgrade Film News to Trieste to record events in Zones A and B and demonstrations for the annexation of the city to Yugoslavia. He was often left with a broken camera, beaten, and imprisoned. After the Trieste years, he served as a photojournalist for Poročevalec (later Delo), covering various sections. After retiring, he devoted 25 years to researching the fate of Allied airmen who were forced to land or parachute onto Slovenian soil during the war.
