Biography
Born in Niš, Serbia. He was a political dissident both in the socialist regime and the recent Milošević regime. His films were first noticed in the late sixties, in the seventies he experienced severe ideological criticism, and some of his films were censored and banned. He worked for independent producers in Germany for several years, later experimenting as a theater director in Yugoslavia, and from 1980 onwards created his specific language, especially in documentary feature films. He is the recipient of various international film awards.
